The key details

In some cases, you may want or need to make changes to your Self Assessment tax return. This can be done through the Taxd Self Assessment.

If you need to make a couple changes to your return, but it’s past the Self Assessment deadline and you have already submitted, you shouldn’t worry. HMRC will let you adjust your Self Assessment submission for 12 months after the statutory deadline. So for the 2020/2021 tax year (due 31 January 2022) you may make any amendments by 31 January 2023. That’s true as long as you make your first submission by 31 Jan 2022.

If you miss the amended return deadline, you need to contact HMRC by letter. If this is the case, they will need details on:

- The tax year you are looking to make changes on;
- The difference in your tax liability (whether you’ve overpaid or underpaid); and
- The reason why you are making this change.

Amendments can be made up to four years after the tax year in question.

If you are entitled to a refund, you will have to include:

  • That you are claiming overpayment relief, and that you haven’t previously tried to claim;
  • Evidence that you paid your initial tax bill;
  • Details on how you would like to be reimbursed; and
  • A signed declaration to confirm the information is correct and complete.

How do I amend a recent Self Assessment?

Amendments can be made on the HMRC portal. Alternatively, you can use Taxd to resubmit your return to HMRC. If you submitted your initial return to HMRC through Taxd, your data will be stored so you can easily make the necessary changes and resubmit to HMRC for free.

The only change is that you will be required to provide a note to HMRC stating the reason for the amended tax return submission.

Once you’ve adjusted your Self Assessment tax return, HMRC should give you an updated bill within a couple of weeks. This will include either a new deadline for tax you owe, or instructions about your payout.

With Taxd, we’ll help you get it right the first time. But we get that you may need to make changes.
