Can I Use Taxd Alongside My Existing Accountant?

One of the most common questions we hear from new Taxd users is whether using Taxd means letting go of their existing accountant. The answer depends on what you want -- because Taxd is designed to do both. As HMRC-recognised software with tax-qualified experts and official tax agent status behind the scenes, Taxd can work seamlessly alongside your accountant, or replace them entirely. The choice is yours.

What Makes Taxd Different

Most software products are just that -- software. Taxd is different. We are HMRC-recognised software built on a foundation of genuine tax expertise: our team includes tax-qualified accountants who act as official tax agents, operating behind the scenes to ensure accuracy and to support you when you need a human in your corner.

This means Taxd is not an either/or. You can use us as software only, lean on our experts as much as you like, or hand us the whole thing and let Taxd handle your tax affairs end to end. This flexibility -- software-led speed with accountant-backed expertise -- is one of our core differentiators.

The MTD Agent Model

Under MTD for Income Tax, HMRC distinguishes between two types of authorisation:

  • A software authorisation: granted to the product that submits quarterly updates and the Final Declaration on your behalf
  • An agent authorisation: granted to a tax agent who can view and manage your HMRC account

These are separate and can coexist. This means Taxd can hold software-level authorisation to submit your MTD returns while your existing accountant continues to hold their own agent authorisation -- without either interfering with the other.

Option 1: Use Taxd Purely as Software

If you want to keep your existing accountant for advice and planning, Taxd can operate purely on the software side. In this arrangement:

  • Taxd connects to HMRC via a software authorisation and handles all quarterly submissions and your Final Declaration
  • Your accountant retains their existing agent authorisation and continues to advise you
  • You own the data in Taxd and can share records with your accountant at any time

This is ideal if your accountant provides strategic or complex tax advice that you value, and you simply want a better, more affordable tool for the day-to-day compliance work.

Option 2: Let Taxd Handle Everything

You do not need a separate accountant to use Taxd. Our tax-qualified experts and official tax agent status mean Taxd can take on everything:

  • HMRC-recognised software for quarterly updates and Final Declaration
  • Tax-qualified accountants available to review, advise, and support on complex situations
  • Official tax agent status, so our team can interact with HMRC directly on your behalf when needed

For landlords, sole traders, and expats who currently pay accountancy fees but want a faster, more cost-effective solution, Taxd can replace your accountant entirely -- with no waiting list and clear, predictable pricing.

Option 3: Use Taxd When Your Accountant Is Not MTD-Ready

MTD for Income Tax is being phased in based on qualifying income: mandatory from April 2026 if you earn over £50,000, from April 2027 if you earn over £30,000, and from April 2028 if you earn over £20,000.

Some smaller accountancy practices are still preparing for MTD. If your accountant cannot submit MTD returns on your behalf in time for your applicable deadline, Taxd is a practical solution -- you meet your compliance obligations without needing to change adviser. You can continue to use your accountant for everything outside MTD, and Taxd handles the quarterly submissions.

Sharing Data with Your Accountant

Taxd allows you to export your records and share them with your accountant at any time. Your quarterly figures, income summaries, and Final Declaration data can all be provided to your adviser in whatever format works for them.

You own your data. Taxd does not lock you in, and your accountant can use the information you share to provide advice alongside the platform.

Common Questions

Will adding Taxd remove my accountant's access to my HMRC account? No. Taxd's software authorisation is entirely separate from your accountant's agent authorisation. Both coexist independently.

My accountant handles my Self Assessment. Does that mean they are automatically handling MTD? Not unless they have specifically set up MTD agent authorisations and are using MTD-compatible software. MTD is a separate system from the current Self Assessment portal. Check with your accountant whether they are set up for MTD submissions.

If I use Taxd's expert support, does that replace my accountant? It can -- if that is what you want. Taxd's tax-qualified experts can handle advice, review, and agent interactions on your behalf. Many Taxd customers use us as a full replacement for their traditional accountant. Others prefer to keep their existing adviser for complex or bespoke matters. Both are valid, and Taxd is built to support either approach.
