The P60 Form
A P60 is an official document issued by your employer at the close of every tax year. It serves as a definitive summary of your total taxable earnings and the exact amount of Income Tax and National Insurance deducted from your pay packets over the preceding 12 months.
Unlike a P45 (which you get when leaving a job), a P60 is given to you if you are still actively employed by the company on the final day of the tax year (5 April).
Why Your P60 Is Important
Your P60 is a powerful financial document. Because it is an official, government-recognized summary of your annual income, you will frequently need it for:
- Proof of Income: Acting as vital evidence when applying for mortgages, bank loans, or rental agreements.
- Administrative Checks: Supporting visa applications, student loan calculations, or working tax credit reviews.
- Tax Management: Reconciling your figures if you need to file a Self Assessment tax return, or checking if you have overpaid tax and are owed a rebate from HMRC.
When You Receive It
The Statutory Deadline: Employers are legally mandated to provide your P60 after the tax year closes on 5 April. You must receive your copy—either physically or digitally via your company's payroll portal—by 31 May at the latest.
Important Note for Company Directors
If you are a director of your own one-person limited company, you might find that you do not automatically receive a P60. This standard scenario typically occurs if:
- You do not pay yourself a regular salary that clears the lower earnings limit.
- You do not run a formal, active PAYE payroll system.
- Your company does not submit monthly Real Time Information (RTI) returns to HMRC.
If this applies to you, your director income and company earnings will instead be reported via your Corporation Tax filings, and you will rely on regular payroll journals or dividend vouchers rather than a P60 for your tax records.
What If You Lose Your P60?
If your P60 goes missing, do not worry—the recovery process is straightforward:
- Request a Duplicate: Unlike a P45, employers are legally permitted to reissue a replacement P60. Simply contact your HR or payroll department and ask for a copy marked "Replacement."
- Check Your Digital Portal: If your employer cannot assist, you can instantly view your complete employment history, year-to-date total pay, and tax contributions online. Simply log in to your HMRC Personal Tax Account or pull up the official HMRC mobile app.
Key Points to Remember
- A P60 compiles your total pay and tax deductions for a specific tax year running from 6 April to 5 April.
- It is a vital tool for proving income during major financial applications (like mortgages).
- You must legally be issued your P60 by your employer by 31 May.
- If misplaced, it can be reissued by your employer or viewed directly via your HMRC Personal Tax Account.
