Lost UTR Number
Don't panic! It's easy to misplace your UTR number, but it's just as easy to find it again. Here's a quick guide on where to look and how to ask HMRC for it if you're still stuck.Your 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is essential for filing your tax return. If you can't find it, here are the steps to take.
1. Check Previous Documents
Before contacting HMRC, it's worth checking any previous tax documents you might have. Your UTR is printed on:
- Your SA302 tax calculation or any tax summary from previous years.
- The 'Notice to File a Tax Return' letter HMRC sends each year.
- Any statements of account.
- The original letter HMRC sent you when you first registered for Self Assessment.
2. Log in to Your Online Account
If you have an HMRC personal tax account set up, you can find your UTR there. Simply log in and head to the Self Assessment section.
3. Ask HMRC to Send It
If you've checked everywhere and still can't find it, you can ask HMRC to post it to you. For security reasons, they will not tell you your UTR over the phone.
- You can call the Self Assessment helpline and, after you pass the security questions, they will mail the UTR to the address they have on file for you.
- This can take 7–10 working days to arrive, so make sure you do this well before the filing deadline!
Once you have it, make sure to add it to your Taxd profile so we have it ready for your next filing.
