How to connect your Taxd account to HMRC for Making Tax Digital

Published on July 7, 2026

If you're using Taxd for Making Tax Digital (MTD), you'll need to connect your account to HMRC before you can send any quarterly updates. This only takes a few minutes — here's exactly what to expect.

Before you start, you'll need:

  • Your National Insurance Number. You'll find this on a payslip, a P60, or in your personal tax account on the HMRC website.
  • Access to your Government Gateway account (your HMRC online account username and password).
  • To have already signed up for MTD directly with HMRC. If you haven't done this yet, you'll need to register your business on HMRC's MTD sign-up page first — Taxd connects to an existing HMRC MTD registration, it can't create one for you.

You do not need your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) for this step.

Step-by-step: connecting to HMRC

  1. Go to Income Tax – MTD in the left-hand menu of your Taxd dashboard, then select Connect to HMRC.
  2. Read the "Getting started" screen and confirm you have your National Insurance Number and HMRC login to hand, then select Get started.
  3. Set up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). HMRC requires every piece of MTD software to enforce MFA, so you'll be asked to secure your account with either:

    • An authenticator app, or
    • Your phone number (you'll be sent a 6-digit code by text to confirm)

Once one method is verified, select Next.

  4. Enter your National Insurance Number in the format shown on screen (e.g. AB123456C), then select Submit.
  5. Select "Link your HMRC account." This opens HMRC's site in a new tab. Log in with your Government Gateway user ID and password, then select Give permission to allow Taxd to view and update your Self Assessment information with HMRC. This permission lasts 18 months and you can revoke it at any time from your HMRC account.
  6. Wait for Taxd to check your connection. You'll see four automatic checks run: testing your HMRC connection, checking you're enrolled for MTD, and retrieving your businesses and obligations from HMRC. When all four show a green tick, you're ready to go.
  7. Select Back to MTD Dashboard. You'll see a confirmation that you're connected to HMRC, and your dashboard will now show your real obligations and deadlines under the Obligations tab.

Troubleshooting

I can't find the "Connect to HMRC" button. It's at the top of the Income Tax – MTD page, and also part-way down the main panel. If you don't see the Income Tax – MTD section at all in your menu, contact us via live chat — it may need enabling on your plan.

HMRC didn't ask me to log in — it just showed a permissions screen. If you're already logged into HMRC's website in your browser (from a previous session), HMRC may skip straight to the "Allow your software to connect" permissions screen. This is normal — just review the permissions and select Give permission.

I completed HMRC's screen but Taxd still says I'm not connected. Go back to Income Tax – MTD and check the checklist screen again — if any of the four checks show an issue rather than a green tick, Taxd will tell you what's wrong (for example, if HMRC doesn't yet show you as enrolled for MTD). Most commonly this means the MTD sign-up with HMRC directly hasn't finished processing yet — this can take HMRC up to 72 hours.

How do I check my connection is still working later on? Go to Income Tax – MTD — if you're connected, you'll see "You are connected to HMRC" under the page title. Your obligations and any submitted updates are visible under the Obligations tab.
