After Filing Your Tax Return

Published on August 5, 2025
You've hit 'submit' on your tax return - congratulations! Here's a quick overview of what happens next and the key documents you should look out for.

Filing your return is the biggest step, but there are a few final things to be aware of.

1. The SA302 Tax Calculation

Immediately after filing, you will be able to view your SA302 tax calculation. This is an important document that summarises your income and shows HMRC's official calculation of your tax bill. You'll need this if you ever need to prove your income for a mortgage or loan.

2. Statement of Account

HMRC will update your Self Assessment statement of account. This will show your new liability for the year, and if you have any upcoming Payments on Account.

3. Paying Your Bill

The final step is to pay the tax you owe by the deadline (usually 31st January). Ensure you use your UTR number as the reference so the payment is allocated correctly.
